Mar 14, 2022
Please join us for another collaboration with Elliott Bay Book Company @elliottbaybookcompany on Monday, March 14, at 6 pm PST as Solmaz Sharif reads from her new collection of poetry, Customs. Graywolf Press describes Customs as "a brilliant, excoriating new collection by a poet whose unfolding works are among the groundbreaking literature of our time."
Her works movingly excavate an internal landscape haunted by psychic dissonance and fractured identity. In a poem titled "The End of Exile," Sharif describes visiting Shiraz and feeling both at home and foreign at once: "As the dead, so I come to the city I am of. Am without."
Born in Istanbul to Iranian parents, Sharif's debut poetry collection, Look, was a finalist for the National Book Award. She is currently an Assistant Professor in Creative Writing at Arizona State University.
